Trekking-pole length: working range versus packed size
Read trekking-pole working ranges and packed lengths correctly. Distinguish fixed, adjustable and folding designs, then check the exact size and bag fit.
On this page
A trekking pole can have a long working length and a much shorter packed length. Those numbers describe different states of the same item. Confusing them can leave you with poles that fit your bag but do not offer the adjustment you expected, or a suitable working length that is awkward to store.
Read the mechanism and the measurements together. This guide explains product specifications, not walking technique, medical support or a load-bearing test. Our day-hike checklist covers the wider packing decisions; a compact pole does not replace the rest of your kit.
Separate working length from packed size
The working or usable length describes the assembled pole in its intended operating configuration. A packed or collapsed length describes its storage configuration. An adjustment range tells you which working lengths a particular adjustable version offers. Keep all three labels rather than treating the smallest and largest numbers on a page as one continuous range.
A concrete example is LEKI’s Makalu FX Carbon listing, model 65620621S. It identifies the Standard version’s adjustment range as 110–130 cm and gives a pack size of 41 cm. The 41 cm figure is not a minimum walking setting, and the specification does not say the pole can be used at every length between 41 and 130 cm.
Folding and adjustable are different features
Folding describes how sections pack away. Adjustable describes whether the assembled pole’s working length can change. A pole can offer either a fixed working length or an adjustment range while still folding for storage.
Black Diamond’s Distance Carbon Z page explicitly describes fixed-length construction and a three-section foldable design. It lists separate sizes including 105, 110, 115, 120, 125 and 130 cm. Those are size choices, not proof that one selected pole adjusts through the whole list.
The manufacturer’s Distance Carbon FLZ page, by contrast, describes adjustable, folding construction and offers 95–110, 110–125 and 125–140 cm variants. The complete product name matters. A similar name, photograph or shared folding feature does not establish the same adjustment behaviour.
Understand what telescopic describes
LEKI’s explanation of pole mechanisms describes telescopic poles as nested tubes that slide into one another. It also explains that some folding designs include an adjustable section. These terms can overlap: a folding pole may use a sliding upper section for working-length adjustment.
Use the actual model’s instructions to identify its locks and permitted settings. Do not infer a safe operating position from how far a tube can physically slide, or use a partly packed pole as though it were fully assembled. Packing convenience and correct assembly are separate questions.
| Label | Describes | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Working length | Assembled length | Fixed size or range? |
| Packed size | Storage length | Which size variant? |
| Folding | Packing mechanism | Also adjustable? |
Read one size variant at a time
A product-family page may place several working lengths beside several packed lengths. Before comparing, select the version you mean and check the corresponding measurements. If the relationship is unclear, ask the manufacturer or seller to identify the matching pair. Do not borrow the shortest packed figure from one version and the longest working figure from another.
For the FLZ examples above, 120 cm lies within the 110–125 cm variant’s stated range. That arithmetic does not determine whether 120 cm suits you. Likewise, a desired working length of 130 cm is outside that variant’s range even though another FLZ variant includes it. Follow the manufacturer’s fitting guidance for your intended activity rather than choosing solely by the smallest packed number.
Check the complete packed bundle
Packed length is only one dimension. Handles, baskets, straps and a storage bag also affect the space occupied by the actual pair. Check the compartment opening and the available space with the rest of your load in place. Our backpack capacity and dimensions guide explains why a litre rating alone cannot answer that fit question.
If a seller cannot confirm the packed dimensions for your selected version, leave the fit unconfirmed. A product photograph is not a measurement. Record the exact model, size, working range and packed size together so you can compare like with like later.
Practical takeaway
Choose the working length or adjustment range first, then check how that exact version packs. Folding does not automatically mean adjustable, and packed length is not a usable setting. Finish with the complete bundle and the actual storage space; neither a compact specification nor this comparison establishes safe use or personal suitability.
