Let’s start with the basics. Where does the word athletics come from?
Well, there are those who say it comes from the Greek term Athlon, which means fight or combat, but another theory is that this term is born from the word Athletes, which refers to the person who competes for a prize in a certain competition.
What is athletics?
But regardless of how it originated its name, athletics is a competitive sport, where they participate individually or in teams, and has the peculiarity that some of the disciplines that comprise it are among the oldest in the history of mankind.
From this we can deduce that athletics alone is not a sporting event; It includes a group of different sports events that can be performed both outdoors and on a covered track.

Where is athletic practice?
Athletics events are held in an outdoor or closed stadium, or basically where there is an athletics track. That brick-colored oval track, if that same one where you’ll have seen Usain Bolt run and you see a lot at the Olympics.
The floor material is usually made of clay or some synthetic material. It measures exactly 400 m, and as I said before it has an oval shape with two lines and two curves.
The vast majority of athletic track disciplines are performed on the track.
While most of the pitches and jumps tests (commonly called field tests) are conducted in the inner area of the running track.
What are the main tests of athletics?
As I said before, athletics is made up of many different disciplines and very varied among them. Let’s see what these athletic tests are and how they can be categorized:
The races on foot
It is likely that this is the discipline that brings together more tests of all, and we can find speed tests as we know 100 mt level, until the challenging marathon where the athlete must run almost 42 km in total.
With a wide variety of intermediate distances where the tests are divided into Speed Racing, Middle Distance Racing, and background racing.
The athletical march
This test has the particularity that you should not run, basically, it is to reach the goal as fast as possible but walking as fast as possible since always one of the two feet must be in contact with the ground.
In this discipline, different tests are included where the ability of long jump or high jump is evaluated. Includes the typical long jump or the pole vault.
This is a discipline where the quality of the athlete’s launch is evaluated and includes tests to launch different devices, from the hammer or disc to the well-known javelin throw test.
Finally, we must mention that there are some special tests that can be included in the concept of athletics. These are the Decathlon and the Heptathlon, two subdisciplines that we will present with more details in future articles.
