Yoga mat sizes: plan floor space and packed storage
Compare yoga mat length, width and thickness separately. Check three named variants, bag openings and the difference between folding for travel and storage.
On this page
A yoga mat has to fit more than one place: the floor where you use it, the bag that carries it and the space where it stays between sessions. A thickness label such as 2 mm or 4.7 mm answers none of those fit questions on its own.
Start with three separate notes: dimensions when laid flat, the stated thickness, and the measurements of the packed mat. This guide uses named manufacturer listings to show how those notes differ. It is not a hands-on mat test or a recommendation about cushioning, grip or suitability for a particular pose.
Draw the floor footprint first
On a sketch of your room, mark the mat's proposed length and width. Keep furniture, door swings and the route through the room on the drawing too. The rectangle shows where the mat would lie; it does not establish how much space your movements require.
For an imaginary clear rectangle measuring 84 by 36 inches, a 79-by-30-inch mat leaves a total difference of 5 inches along the length and 6 inches across the width. Those are differences between the two rectangles, not recommended clearances. Do not mistake a mat fitting on the sketch for enough room to practise comfortably.
If a class provides mats or limits where they can be placed, check that arrangement before buying an unusually wide model. Clothing is a separate choice: our yoga clothing guide covers secure movement and coverage rather than mat dimensions.
Keep the size variant beside the product name
Manduka's PRO Lite listing gives its Long version as 79 by 24 inches. The separate PRO Lite Long & Wide listing gives 79 by 30 inches. The length matches, but the wider version needs another 6 inches across the floor.
| Variant | Flat size | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| PRO Lite Long | 79 × 24 in | 4.7 mm |
| PRO Lite Long & Wide | 79 × 30 in | 4.7 mm |
| PRO Travel Long | 79 × 24 in | 2 mm |
The PRO Travel listing supplies the third row. These are examples from the manufacturer's US product pages, checked in October 2026. They are not a universal meaning of “long,” “wide” or “travel,” and other sizes in the same family have their own measurements.
Read thickness as a separate measurement
The two PRO Lite rows have the same stated thickness but different widths. The PRO Lite Long and PRO Travel Long have the same flat dimensions but different thicknesses. Neither a family name nor one number describes the whole object.
Use the table to answer a narrow question: which listed rectangle fits your intended floor space? Then consider the other specifications separately. This comparison does not rank comfort or establish that a thicker mat is appropriate for your body. A manufacturer's product description is not a physical test performed by CrocsDeal.
Ask for the packed dimensions you need
A laid-flat measurement does not tell you the diameter of a rolled mat. Ask for the actual rolled dimensions of the exact version, including a carrier if you intend to use one. Do not calculate a guaranteed packed size from thickness alone.
If you already own the mat, pack it as its instructions allow and measure that arrangement. Compare it with the bag's opening and usable interior, not just the bag's overall size. Our backpack capacity guide explains why a litre rating cannot settle whether a particular object fits.
For a cupboard or shelf, record the available depth and width and how you plan to position the roll. For a carrying strap, check its stated adjustment range and the actual roll it must hold. Leave an unknown measurement blank rather than assuming every “travel” mat fits your existing carrier.
Separate packing from long-term storage
Manduka describes its PRO Travel mat as foldable, but its care section says to store it rolled with the top facing outwards and not to store it folded. Those instructions address different situations. A travel feature should not be turned into a permanent storage instruction.
Read the care section before deciding where the mat will live. If two listings disagree on a specification, save the exact model and size details and ask the seller or manufacturer to clarify. Combining numbers from different pages can create a product specification that neither page actually describes.
Practical takeaway
Record the exact variant, draw its flat rectangle, and check the packed shape separately. Keep thickness, carrying weight and storage instructions in their own fields. Finish with the real bag or storage space where possible; labels such as “long” and “travel” are a starting point, not a completed fit check.
